The Black Kodiak tote is our softest and slouchiest bag, with a luxurious pebbled texture. A black version of our best-selling Tan Kodiak tote, it's one of the most classic leather totes at KMM & Co., and one that fans of our leather totes have loved (and carried!) for years.
Trying to choose between the Black Harvest tote and the Black Kodiak tote? The Black Kodiak tote is made of soft, pebbled leather that yields a slouchy tote, while the Black Harvest tote is made of smooth, heavy leather that makes for a structured tote.
Imperfections such as variations in color, range marks, small scratches, occasional insect bites, and folds in the leather are natural characteristics of the Kodiak leather. They all come about either during the life of the cow, or sometimes during the tanning process. The Black Kodiak tote will show scratches and wear, and acquire a patina unique to the way you use your bag.
It takes a lot of steps to make a leather tote by hand -- and just as many to break it in and make it yours. Made with vintage techniques for a modern world, your KMM & Co. leather tote bag will show where it’s been with wear and patina -- and every time you scratch it or fold it or get caught in the rain with it, you make it more unique.
Creating a tote bag involves tools such as needle and thread, blades and flame, even stamps and presses. Each tote bag gets its start on the cutting table, where we inspect every cowhide and choose the right piece of leather for your tote. We cut each tote out of a single piece of leather. There’s nowhere to hide imperfections, so we cut carefully.
Next, we make the handles out of 10-ounce belting leather, which will break in and soften with use. We sew the side seams of the bag on an industrial machine. Finally, we hand-set the tote’s handle, pocket, and interior strap with 16 copper rivets.
Every KMM & Co. leather tote bag will become what you make it. If you want a bag that will look exactly the same after a year of heavy use, then this isn’t the bag for you. But if you want a tote that looks and feels like real leather, and will acquire a patina unique to you and the way you use it, this may be the one.
KMM & Co.'s leather tote bags are made by hand and made to order, and they can take up to three weeks to ship. Need yours faster? Email email@example.com and we'll see what we can do! Check out our shipping page for more information on typical processing times.

If you aren't happy with your order, you can return it for free within 30 days of receipt. However, we can't accept returns of items that are customized for you, such as tote bags ordered with longer-than-standard handles, a crossbody strap, or any other additions or modifications.

We want your tote to be perfect for you, so we offer a variety of ways to customize your bag. We can emboss the leather tag that's included with your tote with up to 27 characters, including letters, numbers, and even a few emojis. (Just type what you'd like in the monogram field when you add a tote to your cart!) Other options include:
- Longer handles, which we'll custom-cut just for you
- A detachable crossbody strap, which features brass hardware and is adjustable between the lengths of 44 inches and 51 inches
- A brass snap closure (exactly like the the brass snap closure on our mini totes)
- The addition of a gift set, which includes a matching card envelope, key clip, and cord taco made from the same leather as your tote
- A leather tassel that matches the color of your tote
Or, you can keep things simple and order your tote exactly as-is. It's up to you! Please note that longer-than-standard handles, a crossbody strap, and other modifications are a custom order and make your tote final-sale and ineligible for return or exchange. Select your drop length carefully, as we are unable to make alterations to final-sale items, as per our alterations policy. Reach out to email@example.com if you have any questions!
Sassy and Classy
Love the look and the SUPER soft feel of this bag...I get compliments every time I use it!
Love Love, Love it!
The Black Kodiak Tote is everything I wanted it to be.....I purchased it for myself as an early Christmas present. I will get years of use out of it. Very well made.
I love this tote! I’ve had mine since this summer, and it keeps getting better with time. The leather is so soft and very nice to the feel, especially since I have eczema. No stiff corners or snags anywhere. It is nice to have a bag that is made from one piece of leather so the bottom corners age gracefully instead of tearing apart or getting scuffed. I liked the material so much that over the last several months, I also got the matching gift set, as well as got a matching kodiak clutch. This company has also worked with me to customize my wallets, especially if I like a certain color but the site only shows it in certain styles, and I’ve never waited longer than a couple of weeks at most to receive my customized order.
I love this purse, it smells great, it feels great, & the size is perfect. I was hesitant to pay the high cost for leather, but I am so happy I did because I foresee using this bag for many years to come. Love KMM & Co!
I love the bag but cannot stand how the straps fall off my should them fall off my arm. It happens on both sides. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! If the straps are falling off your shoulder, it may be because they start out a little stiff. They’ll break in with use, but you can accelerate the process by applying a light coat of your favorite leather conditioner and working the straps in your hands. It sounds a little weird. But it’s definitely an effective way to soften the handles and get them to begin molding to your shoulder!
